Nasal and throat obstructions cause coughing and breathing difficulties. The phlegm which piles up in the lungs is one of the main reasons for breathing problems. This is usually not a life-threatening condition, but it does have a negative effect on the quality of your life. Moreover, if left untreated for a longer period of time, it can lead to bigger health problems.
What is Phlegm?
This is a sticky substance created in the respiratory tract. The mucus membranes create phlegm in order to protect the respiratory system, since the mucus traps allergies, viruses and dust. Its main function is to prevent infections, such as colds, but too much mucus leads to coughing.
Too much phlegm in the lungs, which comes as a result of a cold, different viruses and bacterial infections, or flu can lead to severe health issues and cause a runny nose, fever, and weak body functions. If the phlegm is not treated and eliminated on time it can be transferred to the lungs and obstruct the bronchial tubes.
There are a few natural remedies which can help treat excess phlegm and below we present you some of them:
Ginger serves as a natural antihistamine and decongestant which has antiviral, antibacterial and expectorant properties. Ginger root can help relieve throat and chest congestion, because it works on removing the phlegm. In order to stay healthy and to treat your respiratory infections make sure you consume more ginger root, or eat 3-4 pieces of ginger daily.
